Welcome to Madagascar Hissing Cockroach

Off the African coast, in the island of Madagascar, one of the largest species of cockroach can be found. When mature, they can reach 2-3 inches. Native people in the island of Madagascar eat them as an inexpensive source of protein after frying them up. These insects are known as the Madagascar Hissing Cockroach (Gromphadorhina portentosa) or simply the hisser.

To distinguish males from females, male is thicker, hairier antennae and the pronounced "horns" on the pronotum. In captivity, they can live 5 years and feed primarily on vegetable material. Unlike most cockroaches, they do not possess wings and can not fly. In addition, since they are not aggressive and do not bite, they would make an amazing and exotic pet!

A really cool feature to point out; the Madagascar Hissing Cockroach can climb straight up a completely flat surface, such as glass!

Handling 1

Don't be afraid. The Madagascar Hissing Cockroach does not bite. You can either pet it or hold it in your hand

Don't forget to wash your hands before and after handling.


Handling 3

To remove the Madagascar Hissing Cockroach from cage, use your thumb and forefinger to gently clasp the thorax abdomen near the legs base. Or just scoop one up in your hand.

Handling 4

A clear liquid excretion from the Madagascar Hissing Cockroach can be easily wiped off. Occasionally, you can see harmless mites on their abdomen.

Handling 5

The Madagascar Hissing Cockroach sometimes feels sticky like they are gripping your hand. You might feel this a little bit intimidating.


Handling 6

This is very important. Make sure the Madagascar Hissing Cockroach is held directly over the plastic carrying container. If someone accidentally drops it, it will fall safely back into the container instead into the floor.
